MCKEES ROCKS, Pa. — A southwestern Pennsylvania neighborhood was just awarded a pretty chunk of change for its revitalization plans!
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on Monday announced that $3.6 million has been awarded to eight communities to support comprehensive neighborhood revitalization plans to redevelop severely distressed HUD-assisted housing, improve outcomes for residents, and bring new amenities to neighborhoods.
HUD has named Annapolis, Maryland; Augusta, Georgia; Brownsville, Texas; Jackson, Michigan; Las Vegas, Nevada; Los Angeles, California; McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania; and Richmond, Virginia as this year’s grant recipients.
Each recipient is being awarded a grant amount of $450,000.
“As the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative marks its 10-year anniversary, we applaud the transformational work the Initiative has accomplished in the last decade and are excited to continue the mission with today’s announcement,” said Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman. “These resources will support a robust planning process that will bring a wide group of residents and stakeholders together to share their hopes for their community.”
The Choice Neighborhoods initiative supports the revitalization of communities through an emphasis on linking housing improvements with comprehensive social services and physical neighborhood improvements.
Local leaders, residents, and stakeholders, such as public housing authorities, cities, schools, police, business owners, nonprofits, and private developers, came together to create and implement a plan that revitalizes distressed HUD-assisted housing and addresses the challenges in the surrounding neighborhood.
This year’s awardees were selected from a pool of 32 applications.
