Portions of Interstate 279 and the I-279/I-579 High Occupancy Vehicle lanes in Pittsburgh, Ross and Ohio Township will close from Friday night through the morning of Aug. 22.
The Department of Public Works announced the closures are required to demolish Jacks Run Bridge No. 3, which carries Jacks Run Road over I-279 between Bellevue Road/Bellpark Drive and Kane Lane in Ross.
Public Works originally closed Jacks Run Bridge No. 3 on July 3, 2025, after inspectors discovered corrosion in the structure’s only pier. Before its closure, the bridge carried an average of 4,631 vehicles daily.
Friday, Aug. 14, to Saturday, Aug. 15:
- The right lane of I-279 northbound (outbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from two hours after the 6:40 p.m. Pittsburgh Pirates game concludes (or 7 p.m. if the game is postponed) until 6 a.m.
- A single lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- The I-279 northbound (outbound) on-ramp from Cemetery Lane closed from two hours after the Pirates game concludes (or 7 p.m. if the game is postponed) until 6 a.m.
Saturday, Aug. 15, to Sunday, Aug. 16:
- I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from two hours after the 7:15 p.m. Pirates game concludes (or 9 p.m. if the game is postponed) until 9 a.m.
- The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from two hours after the Pirates game concludes (or 9 p.m. if the game is postponed) until 10 a.m.
Sunday, Aug. 16, to Monday, Aug. 17:
- I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Monday, Aug. 17, to Tuesday, Aug. 18:
- I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from two hours after the 7:05 p.m. Pirates game concludes (or 9 p.m. if the game is postponed) until 5 a.m.
- The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from two hours after the Pirates game concludes (or 9 p.m. if the game is postponed) until 6 a.m.
- The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 18, to Wednesday, Aug. 19:
- I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from two hours after the 6:40 p.m. Pirates game concludes (or 9 p.m. if the game is postponed) until 5 a.m.
- The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from two hours after the Pirates game concludes (or 9 p.m. if the game is postponed) until 6 a.m.
- The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 19, to Thursday, Aug. 20:
- I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Thursday, Aug. 20, to Friday, Aug. 21:
- I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Friday, Aug. 21, to Saturday, Aug. 22:
- I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from two hours after the 7 p.m. Pittsburgh Steelers game concludes until 9 a.m.
- The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from two hours after the Steelers game concludes until 10 a.m.
- The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m.
When I-279 northbound is fully closed, mainline traffic will be detoured back to the highway using McKnight Road, Babcock Boulevard, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road and Camp Horne Road.
Traffic traveling from Union Avenue to I-279 northbound will follow a detour using Gass Road, Highland Avenue, Perry Highway, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road and Camp Horne Road.
Drivers on Cemetery Lane and those accessing the closed I-279 North on-ramp from Cemetery Lane will be detoured using Perry Highway, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road and Camp Horne Road.
Demolition work is weather-dependent and cannot occur during heavy rainfall or when lightning is present in the area.
Swank Construction Company of New Kensington is serving as the primary contractor for the $2.8 million project, which began on April 27, 2026.
The Federal Highway Administration is funding the entire project, while the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is overseeing the federal funds.
PennDOT maintains I-279 and the HOV lanes, where an average of 73,367 vehicles travel daily near the bridge site.
Construction of a new bridge will take place as a separate project that is expected to begin next year.
