PITTSBURGH — Leaders from some of the biggest technology companies in the world are in Pittsburgh this week for the AI Horizons Summit.
Governor Josh Shapiro, Thursday’s keynote speaker, called for industry leaders to do their part in safe and responsible use but said we need the federal government to step up.
“The future of a technology this powerful should be shaped by the American people and their representatives, and while information from industry leaders is helpful and very welcome, they should not exclusively guide the regulatory process of this nation,” Shapiro said.
Trust was a big part of the conversation at the event in Bakery Square, as experts in robotics, healthcare, energy, banking, transportation, and more talked about how it can be built through AI best practices and growth.
“Our mission is to be the world’s most trusted driver,” said Euan Guttridge, senior director and head of technical programs at Waymo. “We need to partner with regulators, demonstrate trust with regulators and the public, and to apply this technology safely to Pittsburgh and beyond.”
“AI is here, and it’s not going away. Actually, in Pittsburgh, we have some of the best AI researchers, CEOs, and leaders that are deploying AI safely in their organizations,” said Joanna Doven, CEO of the AI Strike Team.
Shapiro also stressed the importance of using AI responsibly and ethically, especially in AI hubs like Pittsburgh.
“I want to be clear - I am not a doomer. I don’t think it is inevitable that AI is going to take over the world, or that someone will misuse it to kill us or to do harm. But I do have real concerns,” Shapiro said. “We need the federal government to establish strict rules of the road — and then enforce those rules to ensure a level playing field — rules that require independent, third-party oversight of frontier models, increase transparency into the development of these models, and prioritize safety above all else.”
The AI Horizons Pittsburgh Summit continues Friday.
