WILKINSBURG, Pa. — Freezing temperatures caused problems for firefighters early Friday morning as they battled flames at a Wilkinsburg home.

Officials said the icy conditions made it difficult for crews because water that was used to douse the flames quickly froze.

“Ice is always a hazard. Wilkinsburg Boro had their public works on scene to salt. They salted the fire scene and allowed us access,” Battalion Fire Chief John Walsh said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Firefighters salted the areas they could until bigger equipment was brought in to deal with the ice.
