INDIANA, Pa. — Indiana University of Pennsylvania officials announced Monday that they will not be renewing the contract of women's basketball head coach Jeff Dow.
Channel 11's Courtney Brennan reported that allegations were made against Dow about his behavior as a coach. However, officials would not comment on the reasoning behind Dow's dismissal.
Dow said that he was given no explanation for his firing. Dow told Brennan that he was only told that he "...was not deemed to be the right fit for how they wanted the program to go."
"He's one of the most successful coaches here, and to hear this come out yesterday, at 5:30, that he resigned or was let go was a huge shock,” said Josh Carney, lead sports writer for the university paper.
He said the timing was bizarre because they just had the team banquet on Sunday, where the school administrators were at his table.
Dow has been the women's basketball head coach since 2008.
The parents of a former player told Channel 11 that they sent University President Tony Atwater a letter stating their concerns.
In part, the letter stated, "...the women's basketball team should not have to be subjected to this behavior...they should have a top notch, well-adjusted coach with the right language skills..."
IUP said two of Dow's assistants will also not have their contracts renewed.
