“It’s simple, really. At Joe’s, we believe that great food, service and atmosphere should be included in the price of your meal,” said Ray Blanchette, CEO of Ignite Restaurant Group, the parent company of Joe’s Crab Shack. “We believe tipping is an antiquated model that most businesses have migrated from over the last 50 years, and we intend to relegate it to our history, too."
Guests of the restaurant can expect the same food and service without the obligation to leave tips. In addition, no service charge will be added to the bills in an effort to replace the gratuity.
The new policy is meant to benefit Joe’s Crab Shack employees, as well.
The idea is that servers, hosts and bartenders will be paid higher, fixed hourly wages.
The no-tipping policy was initially tested in Indianapolis, and is being rolled out to 17 more restaurants this month.
“Though we’re still in the test phase, we are already receiving very positive feedback from our guests both anecdotally and in our service scores,” Blanchette said. “Our staff has also embraced the change, which is important as we seek to implement the new policy across the system over time.”
