Jury reaches decision on brothers charged in 2017 Penn Hills robbery, homicide

PENN HILLS — Two brothers charged in a deadly shooting in Penn Hills in 2017 have received their verdicts.

Donald King was convicted on first-degree murder charges for the 2017 shooting death of Kevin Trowery in Penn Hills. King was also convicted on all other charges except for theft and receiving stolen property.

Devante King, Donald’s brother, was convicted of second-degree murder and all other charges.

According to police, they are two of three men who robbed and killed Kevin Trowery at a home in Penn Hills in August 2017.

The third man, Dustin Taylor, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder before the start of the jury selection.

Police found the shooting victim just after 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 6, 2017, in the back of a home on Conestoga Road. The victim, identified as Kevin Trowery, 54, was declared dead at the scene.

According to a criminal complaint, police responded to a shots fired call to the home and say the three men, all in black clothing and appearing to have masks over their faces, exited through the back of the house. When a responding officer confronted the men and identified himself, they attempted to run away.

Donald King was the first one caught.

The complaint also says describes the surveillance video from the three men’s fatal encounter with Trowery.

Sources told Channel 11 during the preliminary hearing in October 2017 that the video is hard to watch.

A sentencing date for the King brothers has been set for March 9, 2022.
