WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — Summer kicked off a few weeks early for the people who went to Kennywood’s opening day on Saturday.
The park, which first opened in 1898 and has become a Pittsburgh icon, welcomed visitors for the first time this season.

While the park isn’t offering any new rides this year, Kennywood has added new food items to a menu that already includes classics like Potato Patch fries and funnel cakes.
“At the Backyard BBQ there’s a new menu with burgers, dogs, chicken and kielbasa,” said Kennywood spokesman Nick Paradise. “We added a second Rita’s Italian ice stand because the one over in Lost Kennywood did so well last year.”
The park will be closed Sunday, but will reopen to the public next Saturday
