PITTSBURGH — There was no room in the inn, and there might not be room in the budget to keep a local tradition in downtown Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Crèche has been downtown for more than a decade. But recently, there have been big questions about whether it would be able to stay there.

Channel 11 News has learned that the crèche fund needs a cash infusion because the original funding sources are no longer available.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize how much it costs,” said supporter Deeann Johnson. “I think once they do, a lot of people will be willing to contribute.”

A near-replica of the one in Rome, the Pittsburgh Crèche was first erected on U.S. Steel property on Grant Street 15 years ago. Since then, thousands have made Christmas-time visits a tradition.

“I enjoy coming here and like I was telling Father, there are so many people from out of town that come here and just admire this,” said Tom Byrne.

Current figures show crèche expenses are running $50,000 to $60,000 per year for setup, tear down and storage.

Dwindling funds lead to an uncertain future.

“We have no funds, really. Right now I believe God will provide in some way once people know,” said Fr. Ron Lenguin, Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh spokesperson.

A number of Christian churches support the crèche, along with several others.

“Without the $50,000 we got from the Diocese of Pittsburgh this year, the Catholic Diocese, we have nothing for next year,” said Lenguin.

Visitors like Deeann Johnson call the crèche an important part of their faith.

“It’s a symbol of what the season really means,” Johnson said.

Fr. Ron says people can donate through the Pittsburgh Foundation, Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. Gifts are tax deductible.

You can also donate through the Diocese's website.
