MCCANDLESS, Pa. — At least 50 people were evacuated from a retirement community in McCandless after a strong gas odor was detected.

Crews were called to the Vincentian Home in McCandless around 11 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a strong gas odor with people feeling ill.

One person was taken to the hospital for an issue unrelated to the gas leak.

The 50 evacuated people were taken to another location with heat.

Peoples Gas turned off service to the building as a precaution.

It was declared a mass casualty incident, meaning EMS resources from across Allegheny County were called to the scene and prepared for a large-scale evacuation.

Peoples told us they are investigating the issue.

A spokesperson for Vincentian tells Channel 11 the source of the problem has been identified and repairs should be done within the next 24 hours.
