PITTSBURGH — Free agency frenzy has begun for the NHL.
The Penguins, who made two trades in recent days and got six prospects during the NHL Draft, have several roster needs coming into free agency.
Per our partners at PGHHockeyNOW.com, the roster is currently unbalanced, particularly on defense.
Money is not an issue, since the Pens have nearly $36 million in salary cap space.

UPDATE 4:55 P.M.
The Penguins lost a defenseman to free agency. Elliotte Friedman reports Ryan Shea is headed to the Oilers on a 5-year, $4 million contract.
UPDATE 4:45 P.M.
The Penguins have signed a prospect within their own system to an entry-level contract.
The team signed forward Atley Calvert, 22, to a two-year contract. He just finished his second season within the Penguins organization, spending all of last season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
UPDATE 3:35 P.M.
The Penguins have now signed Trevor van Riemsdyk to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $4 million.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenseman tallied 14 points in 68 games with the Capitals last season. He has 161 points across a 751-game career.
UPDATE 3:25 P.M.
Another free agent contract is official. The Penguins signed Andrei Kuzmenko to a one-year, $5 million contract.
The 30-year-old Russian forward just completed his fourth NHL season, spending the most recent season with the LA Kings. During the 2025-26 season, he had 25 points in 52 games.
In his career, Kuzmenko has skated in 271 games, totaling 182 points.
UPDATE 3:15 P.M.
The Penguins officially announced that the team is signing Declan Carlile, 26, to a two-year contract with a $1.5 million average annual value.
The Hartland, Michigan, native has been with the Tampa Bay organization for all five years of his professional career, splitting the 2025-26 season between the NHL and AHL levels.
UPDATE 3:05 P.M.
The Penguins are signing forward Andrei Kuzmenko, per Pierre LeBrun, to a one-year, $5 million contract.
UPDATE 2:15 P.M.
Per NHL insiders, three players are moving on from Pittsburgh. Defenseman Connor Clifton is going to the Bruins, center Noel Accari is going to the Flyers and goalie Stuart Skinner is heading to the Jets.
UPDATE 1:15 P.M.
The Penguins made two quick moves after the free agency window opened, making deals with right-handed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk and left-handed defenseman Declan Carlile (per Elliotte Friedman).
Penguins Now called the Carlile signing a 2-year, $3 million contract, a “great get,” describing him as a tough and aggressive defenseman who keeps tight gaps.
