WASHINGTON, Pa. — A local mom is calling for action after her son found a gun inside a boy’s restroom at Washington High School.
Channel 11 has learned the weapon belonged to a school resource officer.
“What could’ve happened? That’s a scary thing,” Mary Jane Vasko told Channel 11. Her son Lucas, an 11th grader, found the firearm.
He says he spotted it on the floor.
“I went in there, looked down and saw the weapon. [I] did my business, washed my hands, got right back to the room,” Lucas said.
“I was a little shocked, concerned. Definitely concerned for my kids,” Vasko said.
She says school officials told her the gun belonged to a school resource officer.
“You’re there to protect our children. You should be aware where your firearm is at all times,” Vasko said.
Channel 11 spoke with the district superintendent, who sent us this statement:
“We take the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously. We are reviewing our procedures and reinforcing expectations with all staff. Appropriate disciplinary action has been taken in accordance with district policies. We remain committed to maintaining a safe learning environment.”
Vasko says she’d like to see more communication from the district to parents and a harsher penalty for the officer involved.
“They should be lucky that it was a child smart enough to use his brain and do the right thing,” she said.
District officials did not tell us what kind of punishment was given to the officer.
