CONNOQUENESSING TOWNSHIP, Pa. — People who live at Rolling Valley Estates are fed up with the issues they’re dealing with.
“Dirty water, smelly water, sewage problems, lot rent, the whole works,” said Hazel Slagle.
Slagle has lived at the mobile home park for 31 years but has never dealt with water issues like she has for nearly a year.
In August, Slagle said water was shut off without notice, and then it was brown.
“I took a picture of it in my pitcher, and I sent it to the township,” she said. “It looked like I poured vinegar into a pitcher.”
Now, local and state leaders have pushed the state Department of Environmental Protection to hold Stackhouse Management accountable.
On Friday, State Representative Aaron Bernstine said the DEP was at the property and issued a Tier-1 “do not drink” advisory. That comes after manganese levels were above the 10-day health advisory levels for bottle-fed infants because of a failure of the park’s well water system.
“It is absolutely unacceptable what has transpired in terms of the lack of quality water for these individuals,” Bernstine said.
Slagle said bottled water is being provided, and water coolers were also given to residents.
She said she doesn’t even want to shower or wash clothes or dishes with this water.
“I gave up buying white clothes years ago,” she said. “It just turns them brown; it ruins my comforters, everything.”
Bernstine said there could be fines against Stackhouse if things aren’t addressed.
Connoquenessing has moved to fine Stackhouse $500 per day.
The DEP could fine them $5,000 per day, per violation.
“We need a long-term fix, and Stackhouse needs to step up,” Bernstine said.
Slagle is glad the pressure is being put on the property management but isn’t optimistic.
“Oh yes. It’s about time,” she said. “They do not care about anybody that they’re renting to.”
Channel 11 called and emailed Stackhouse Management but has not heard back.
