ARNOLD, Pa. — A Westmoreland County man accused of assaulting his 7-week-old son last month faced a judge Thursday.

According to court papers, 21-year-old Daniel Granado was changing his son’s diaper inside an Arnold apartment when the baby had an accident.

Investigators said Granado reacted by angrily throwing the baby back down onto a changing table.

Doctors at Children’s Hospital concluded that there were signs of child abuse consistent with shaken baby syndrome, police said.

“No I didn’t (mean to hurt my baby),” Granado told Channel 11’s Joe Holden Thursday. “Just get out of my face.”

Granado’s father told Holden his son is “not a monster” and he regrets what happened.

Authorities said they’re closely monitoring the baby’s condition.

“He is home and getting better. That’s all we can hope for,” Arnold police Chief Willie Weber said. “We’re a little too early, they tell us, to tell if there’s going to be permanent damage.”

On Thursday, a judge increased Granado’s bail, and he left the courtroom in handcuffs.
