MOUNT OLIVER, Pa. — A Mt. Oliver man is facing charges after he allegedly attacked his wife with a homemade machete in front of their two children Tuesday night.
Mt. Oliver Police Chief Matt Juzwick said he found the victim wearing just a T-shirt and pants outside a tiny apartment on Hays Avenue, where her husband, 28-year-old Devi Bhandari, allegedly attacked her.
“We arrived on scene and noticed a female wearing only a T-shirt and pants,” he said. “It was only about 18 degrees that day.”
Police said the blade Bhandari allegedly used to slash his wife’s face was made by hand.
“The blade was about 12 to 18 inches long with a wooden handlebar,” said Juzwick. “Something I've never seen before.”
According to police paperwork, Bhandari became irritated during an argument and punched his wife in the face. He then turned to his 5-year-old daughter and threatened to hit her, too, before being taken into custody.
Bhandari was charged with child endangerment, aggravated assault and making terroristic threats.
“It's something very traumatic for them. Something we never want to see, especially when it involves children,” said Juzwick.
Bhandari’s wife remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the children have been removed from the couple’s home.
Devi Bhandari, 28, allegedly used a homemade machete, similar to the one pictured here, to attack his wife in front of the couple’s two children.
