HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. — State police in Greensburg said they arrested a man who is accused of trying to rape a woman along a walking trail.

Investigators said Anthony Flowers, 20, approached the woman along the Five Star Trail in Hempfield Township Monday afternoon and asked to use her cellphone.

Police said when the victim told Flowers she didn't have one, he grabbed her and dragged her by the leg to a parking lot. Officers said the victim fought back by kicking and screaming.

Flowers eventually ran away from the scene and was arrested by police a short time later.

According to the criminal complaint, police asked Flowers why he followed the woman and he said because he liked the way she looked. He also said he ran because he thought the cops were coming.

“You’re kidding!” Cheryl George said Tuesday from the trail as Channel 11 News told her about the incident. “If I had known that, I would not have come down here to walk today.”

Flowers faces assault and attempted rape charges. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 3.
