MCKEES ROCKS, Pa. — A McKees Rocks man was found fatally shot shortly after his girlfriend told police he left after answering an early-morning cellphone call.
That's one reason Allegheny County homicide detectives believe the phone call and 19-year-old Javon Riley's death might be related.
The victim's girlfriend said he was awakened by the call about 4 a.m. Monday and left without telling her why.
A short time later, neighbors heard gunshots and called police, who found Riley -- who was unarmed -- dead of bullet wounds near his girlfriend's car on Vine Street.
"It's really scary around here in the neighborhood right now," one neighbor said.
McKees Rocks Police Chief Robert Cifrulak said police don't know why Riley was shot but are investigating the possibility that the phone call was part of a plot to lure him outside.
“We believe the gunshots or the actual shooting could have occurred sometime just after 4 a.m.,” Cifrulak said.
Authorities said they’re working to track down who called Riley minutes before the shooting.
