PITTSBURGH — A man was rushed to the hospital after he was hit by a tow truck on Pittsburgh’s South Side on Wednesday morning.
Officers were called to the 2000 block of Wharton Street behind the Giant Eagle just before 7 a.m.
Public Safety officials said preliminary information indicates that the man’s vehicle was being towed when he ran in front of the truck, tripped and fell into its path.
The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition with head and arm injuries.
The tow truck driver remained on scene.
Police remained at the scene for hours as officers processed evidence and investigated what happened.
The incident drew attention from nearby workers and residents, some of whom said the large emergency response was unusual for the area.
Robert Crowder, who works nearby, said he was surprised by the number of officers at the scene and initially did not know what had happened.
“A lot of police, a lot of police, a car and a hitch being towed, but they’re holding it. I work here and just wanted to know if I could come through when I asked them ‘what happened’ and they said ‘an accident,’” Crowder said. “It’s a quiet neighborhood. I mean, we have no problems down here, to see this many police officers it’s like what happened?”
The investigation is ongoing.
