ADAMS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Authorities are investigating after an 80-year-old man was hit and killed by a car in Butler County on Wednesday night.

The crash happened in the parking lot of the Adams Shoppes Plaza in Adams Township.

Police said William Kvindis, 80, was struck and thrown about 16 feet while going to Dairy Queen. He was waiting for his girlfriend and partner of 16 years, who was nearby getting her hair done.

Kvindis later died at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

“They were just great together,” said Kvindis’ friend, David Riesmeyer. “Bill was a wonderful man. He was always happy and I know he was killed by a suspected drunk driver. It’s just unbelievable.”

Investigators told Channel 11 News that speed is believed to be a factor in the accident.

Police said a 62-year-old man was questioned and later released. A blood-alcohol test was conducted, but no charges have been filed on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Terri Stobert, who works at Great Clips, said she knows the couple and saw the accident.

“It was unbelievable. I knew the man that hit them. I mean, it could’ve been me, but by the grace of God, it’s sad,” said Stobert.

Police said they’re awaiting the toxicology results and will update the investigation when they’re able to.
