Man receives life sentences for two 2013 killings

PITTSBURGH — A man received two life sentences without parole Wednesday for the deaths of a 16-year-old boy and a 37-year-old man.

Deondre Pace, 16, was shot and killed in January 2013 after a dispute with Ashanti Montgomery, now 20, in Pittsburgh's Allentown neighborhood. Three days later, Montgomery killed Lou Auer, 37, after a confrontation in East Liberty.

"He deserved what he got. He took the life of a young man that didn't deserve to die," Deteshia Palmer, Pace's mother, said of Montgomery.

Auer's family declined to comment on Montgomery's sentence.

Palmer said her two younger sons have been in therapy since the death of their brother.

"They really miss their brother a lot. It's hard having two other boys to raise without their oldest brother in their life," Palmer said.

Montgomery's attorney said his client maintains his innocence and plans to appeal.
