PITTSBURGH — A man is dead after being struck by a train Wednesday night on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

The man was struck just before 9 p.m. on the Norfolk Southern tracks near Anderson Street, which is near the Giant Eagle.

A spokesperson with Norfolk Southern Corporation confirmed that the eastbound Norfolk Southern train had one locomotive and 11 empty rail cars.

The train, which came from Cleveland and was headed to Columbia, Pennsylvania, was stopped while police investigated what happened.

The train’s engineer told Pittsburgh police that a middle-aged, white man walked onto the tracks as the train headed northbound.

The engineer said he repeatedly sounded the horn in an attempt to alert the man, but he continued to walk and then laid across the tracks.

Police said the engineer applied the brakes but was not able to halt the train in time.

Medics pronounced the man dead.

No additional details were immediately available.
