NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Jameson Hospital’s Maternity Care Center will close Wednesday, nearly two weeks earlier than planned, the Jameson Health System announced Tuesday.
According to a press release, the hospital expected to keep its maternity wing open until Sept. 1, but inadequate staff numbers for all shifts forced the closure date to be moved up.

"Our labor and delivery birthing service is not only valued by our organization and our community - most fittingly, it is loved," said Doug Danko, president and CEO of Jameson Health System. "It will always be remembered and honored as a service that brought lives into our community and life into our world. It is led by talented and caring health care professionals whose purpose is to provide compassionate care. They will always be respected with gratitude for the value they have created for countless families in our community."
Patients expecting to deliver between Aug. 20 and Aug. 31 have been contacted and alternate arrangements have been made for labor and delivery services with nearby hospitals. A hospital spokesperson said most patients will be transferred to UPMC Horizon in Mercer County.
While the Maternity Care Center is closing, the press release indicated that Jameson's emergency department physicians and staff will continue to receive labor and delivery training for any obstetrical emergencies that arrive in the hospital's emergency department.
