UPPER ST. CLAIR, Pa. — A baseball field at Boyce-Mayview Park in Upper St. Clair has been shut down after mine subsidence caused a 60-square-yard area to sink.

Township officials made the decision to issue the closure, which will likely last for the summer, after being made aware of the approximately three-foot drop in the field, which is near a play area and pool.

Parents told Channel 11 that they are concerned about whether the subsidence will continue and threaten the jungle gym adjacent to the field and the pool area across the street where children play.

Upper St. Clair Township Manager Matt Serakowski said that so far, the sunken ground has been contained to the ball field.

News of the mine subsidence came as a complete surprise to parents in one of Upper St. Clair’s most popular parks.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Beth Sadlek said. “I’m not sure I want to be here right now.”

Some didn’t even know the area had been mined.

“This is a very popular park,” said Debbie Natali. I did not know there was mine subsidence here.”

Township officials told Channel 11 that a 60-square-yard area is affected and they will monitor the area over the next 10 days.
