PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Regional Transit will temporarily close the Mount Washington Transit Tunnel for about a week starting Monday for routine electrical maintenance.
Riders should expect delays of up to 20 minutes during the tunnel closure.
The closure will allow maintenance crews to replace and repair the overhead electrical lines that supply power to light-rail vehicles.
The closure is scheduled to continue through the start of service on Saturday, when normal transit operations are expected to resume.
The Mount Washington Transit Tunnel serves as a critical connection between South Hills Junction and Station Square Station. It is the only transit tunnel in the country shared by both buses and light rail vehicles.
During the closure, all inbound and outbound light rail service will detour through Allentown.
Inbound buses will travel via Allentown, while outbound bus service will detour through the Wabash Tunnel. Normal weekday directional operations for the Wabash Tunnel will be suspended. Instead of operating in the inbound direction during the morning peak period as usual, the Wabash Tunnel will remain in the outbound direction throughout the day for the entire week of the closure.
Pittsburgh Regional Transit will operate a rail shuttle between the outbound platform of Station Square and Allegheny Station to maintain service along the corridor.
