PITTSBURGH — Channel 11 viewers who own a Mount Washington bar say they think a man suspected in a recent burglary aired on the news also struck their business.
The owners of Scarpaci's said they think Robert Campoli, the man accused of burglarizing Frank and Shirley's Restaurant in Overbrook, also stole from them this past Sunday.
Surveillance video from both incidents caught the eye of the owners of Scarpaci's and one of the establishment’s bartenders.
“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ I can't believe it was the same guy,” said a bartender at the Mount Washington bar who did not want to be identified.
Pittsburgh police arrested Campoli Tuesday after they said he tried to burglarize Frank and Shirley's Restaurant on Saw Mill Run Blvd.
Scarpaci's said $500 is gone from their dart and video poker machines.
The owners said they watched their surveillance video, saw Channel 11's report on Frank and Shirley's and then found Campoli's name on their ID scanner.
“Once we found out, we matched up the name with the time he was here and on the video,” said the bartender.
The bartender said she scanned Campoli's ID Sunday before he bought a beer and then went into the back alone.
In the surveillance video, he can be seen playing darts, then prying the machine open and putting the money in his pocket before putting it back together. He then moves to the video poker machine and steals from it.
The bartender said she didn't hear anything unusual and that the man came back to the bar for another beer.
“No nervousness. Nothing jittery; just acted calm, cool, like, ‘I'm supposed to be here, drinking my beer,’” she said.
Scarpaci's said this burglary is the first time something like this has happened in a long time.
The owners have filed a police report. So far, police have not connected the two crimes.
As for the bartender, she’s glad the man was caught.
“(I’m) relieved he's not gonna come back here anytime soon,” she said.
