LAWRENCE COUNTY, Pa. — Several hundred acres of land caught fire Sunday evening in a brush fire caused by a man burning leaves in Shenango Township, fire officials said.

The fire quickly spread, damaging about 500 acres of land. Witnesses said at one point, flames were shooting 50 feet in the air.

Firefighters said high winds caused the flames to change directions, putting more than two dozen homes at risk.

No injuries were reported.

At one point, the fire came within 100 yards of a home, but firefighters were able to get the flames under control.

The fire is under investigation by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
