SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The parents of Ava Campbell, the Shaler Township girl who was hit and killed by a suspected drunken driver, called for change to the state’s DUI law Tuesday.
A news conference was held at the Bauerstown Volunteer Fire Company, where 6-year-old Ava’s father, David Campbell, serves as chief.

While David Campbell and his wife, Amber Campbell, again thanked the community for their outpouring of love and support, their focus at the news conference was to begin a new conversation about the “broken system” that allowed the tragedy to happen.

Police said the driver who hit Ava, 20-year-old Travis Grayson, admitted to drinking beer and smoking marijuana before getting behind the wheel. He had previously been cited three times in the past three years for underage drinking, but each time the charge was dismissed or pleaded down.
“My suggestion is that we talk to our local legislators and ask them what we can do, what we change so that no other family has to endure this pain and suffering ever again,” said Amber Campbell.
