PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Public Parking Authority is working on a newer, easier way for drivers to pay for parking in Pittsburgh.

Officials said the car’s license plate will replace the need for a paper receipt in the window.

The solar-powered multispace parking meters allow the driver to enter their license plate number, pay for however long they wish to park and simply walk away.

“The whole issue where you go to the machine and then you have to go back to your car, that’s not so convenient,” parker Beth Lonsinger said.

The new meters will eliminate the tickets parkers are used to displaying on their dash.

“I think (the new meters) are progress and I think they sound like a good idea if I can remember my license plate number,” Lonsinger said.

Parking Authority officials said they hope to eventually replace more than 3,000 single space parking meters around the city. The new parking boxes could start going in as soon as July.

“Anything that’s more convenient, easier and faster for me is great,” Mary Nash said.

Officials said the cost of the conversion will be $6.9 million over a seven-year period.
