PITTSBURGH — A new traffic pattern is expected to cause delays in Oakland.
Pittsburgh Regional Transit shuts down another lane of traffic on Fifth Avenue on Monday as part of the ongoing University Line bus rapid transit project.
For the last several months, two lanes of Fifth Avenue have been closed. Now, a third lane is shutting down for three blocks between Bellefield Avenue and Lytton Avenue.
In that area, only one lane of traffic will be open to general traffic. Buses will continue to use the red bus-only lanes. It wasn’t immediately clear how long the lane closure will remain.
The additional lane closure will allow contractors to install five concrete islands.
PRT says access to sidewalks and side streets will be maintained.
Drivers should expect delays and allow for additional travel time.
The University Line project aims to deliver a modernized transit corridor featuring dedicated bus-only lanes and a two-way protected bike lane.
Officials say the upgrades will strengthen connections between Downtown, Uptown and Oakland while improving travel experiences for riders, pedestrians and cyclists.
