Penguins ghastly giveaways give Capitals big win

WASHINGTON — This article originally appeared on PGHHockeyNOW.com.

It was the final time Alex Ovechkin would be introduced for a Washington Capitals (2-1-0) home opener. And his young sons did the honor. After 22 years of battling Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins (2-2-0), the personal rivalry is coming to an end after this season with Ovechkin’s retirement.

However, the Penguins were far too generous in the first period, spotting Washington glorious chances and free pucks. Washington glided to a 5-3 win.

The Penguins committed seven turnovers in the first period, and it seemed like three times that number, while scorers tabbed Washington with just one. Emphasizing the lopsided beginning, Washington also outshot the Penguins 14-4.

The Penguins clawed their way back in the game, but not necessarily by tilting the ice. The Penguins got a couple of goals later in the second period. Tommy Novak cleaned up Evgeni Malkin and Egor Chinakhov’s two-on-one, and Nick Robertson deflected Kaedan Korczak’s shot late in the second, but the Penguins never had their best game.
