By late in the second period, the Columbus Blue Jackets were outshooting the Pittsburgh Penguins 27-6 and owned a 54-14 shot attempt advantage. The only thing Columbus didn’t do to the Penguins was land the knockout blow.
The Penguins found their legs late in the second period and overcame a battalion’s worth of mistakes to force overtime. And then a shootout, but shootout struggles continued and the Penguins lost 3-2 in a shootout to Columbus at Nationwide Arena Friday.
Penguins rookie goalie Sergei Murashov made plenty of top-shelf stops, and Penguins winger Bryan Rust scored on the play affectionately known as “The Rusty” when he swept off the left wing toward the net and extended around Columbus goalie Cam Talbot late in the second period.
Rust’s goal sparked the Penguins to emotionally engage in the contest after more often performing their best stilted impersonation of Boris Karloff’s heavy-footed Frankenstein.
