LATROBE, Pa. — PennDOT snowplow operators are participating in a two-week training session in Latrobe to prepare for upcoming winter weather.

The program provides operators with hands-on practice using specialized wing plows. Because these units are wider than standard snow plows, drivers are able to remove a larger volume of snow during a single pass.

Robb Dean serves as the Assistant District Executive for Maintenance at PennDOT District 12. He noted that operators spend warmer months working on general road repairs before shifting their focus back to winter operations.

“This is a good opportunity. Over the summer, they’ve been doing a lot of other work patching potholes and repairing roadways, so it’s reacclimating themselves and getting them ready to be out on the road when the weather turns,” Dean said.

In addition to preparing current operators, PennDOT is attempting to recruit workers for open positions. The agency is specifically seeking job candidates who hold a commercial driver’s license.
