Pennsylvania natural gas production drops for second straight quarter

Natural gas production dropped for the second quarter in a row in Pennsylvania, according to new data.

There was 1.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas production in the second quarter ended June 30, according to Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection data released by the Independent Fiscal Office. That’s down 1.6% from 1.93 trillion cubic feet produced in the comparable three months in 2025. It’s the lowest amount of natural gas produced in the state over a quarter since the fourth quarter of 2024. But 2025 production and new well drilling were the highest level in several years.

The decline comes at a time when the other Marcellus and Utica basins in Ohio and West Virginia have shown consistent increases: Ohio’s production rose 7% in the second quarter year over year while West Virginia’s has grown 2.3%. Other competing basins had higher growth: New Mexico and Louisiana were both up 10% quarter over quarter.
