Pennsylvania pharmacy technician charged with stealing nearly 90K prescription pills

A Pennsylvania pharmacy technician is facing charges after authorities say she stole nearly 90,000 prescription pills.

Alyssa R. McDowell, 34, is charged with several felony counts of obtaining a controlled substance by misrepresentation, theft by unlawful taking and related misdemeanors, Attorney General Dave Sunday announced on Tuesday.

The AG said McDowell stole oxycodone and hydrocodone from Sheffield Pharmacy in Warren County by ordering extra bottles, taking them for herself and altering paperwork in an attempt to cover it up between January 2022 and May 2026.

Investigators say 80,926 Oxycodone pills and 8,744 Hydrocodone pills were taken from the pharmacy.

Sunday emphasized that crimes like this have larger implications that affect communities all throughout the Commonwealth.

“This defendant used her position to obtain a massive amount of highly addictive medications,” Attorney General Sunday said. “This type of conduct fuels a prescription drug abuse crisis that, so often, leads to individuals using fentanyl and heroin.”

McDowell surrendered to police on Tuesday. Her bail was set at $100,000.
