POTTERS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Pennsylvania leaders say the Commonwealth just secured a $15 million settlement with Shell over air quality violations.
The Shapiro administration said Shell admitted to exceeding emissions limits for contaminants and other environmental requirements.
“DEP is continuing to hold Shell accountable for air quality violations and continuing to secure resources to improve the neighboring communities,” said DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley. “This penalty and the new Beaver County Environment and Community Fund will help improve the surrounding communities and reduce the impact from the facility on the people that live there.”
Half of the settlement will go to Beaver County, home of Shell’s ethane cracker plant in Potter Township, for community improvement projects, including solar energy installations, museum exhibits and local park upgrades.
Shell is also required to submit plans to improve the facility’s flaring system and upgrade its wastewater treatment plant.
