Nearly 3 million vehicles are expected to take the Pennsylvania Turnpike to their Labor Day weekend destinations.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission expects 2.9 million vehicles to travel the turnpike system from Sept. 3 through Sept. 7. That’s just over 1% more vehicles than last year.
To accommodate the increase in traffic, the commission is suspending all roadway construction and maintenance projects starting at 3 p.m. Sept. 3 through 11 p.m. Sept. 7 to ensure maximum travel lane availability.
Pennsylvania State Police will deploy extra patrols throughout the turnpike system during the holiday weekend, focusing on vehicle speeds, tailgating and overall driving safety.
Law enforcement will also enforce Paul Miller’s Law, which prohibits the use of hand-held electronic devices while operating a vehicle in Pennsylvania, even while stopped at traffic lights.
