The Pennsylvania Treasury’s next unclaimed property auction is coming soon.
Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity says the Oct. 28 virtual auction will feature approximately 6,000 items, including jewelry, coins, currency and precious metals.
The state is partnering with Pook & Pook to prepare and host the online sale. Pennsylvania Treasurer Garrity spoke about the auction preparations and working with the auction house.
“Our next unclaimed property auction is a few weeks away and we’re already excited for the fantastic items Pennsylvanians will have the opportunity to bid on,” Garrity said. “Our partners at Pook & Pook work closely with us to make sure our items are ready for auction and to go to successful bidders to help make room in Treasury’s vault.”
Some items in the auction include:
- Platinum ring with a 6.11 ct. round diamond and 38 single-cut diamonds;
- 14K yellow gold chain with slider charm with green stone and Gold-filled Waltham pocket watch, 29.6 dwt;
- 1907 S Liberty Head $20 gold coin with 22K mount, 28.3 dwt; and
- 18K yellow gold Omega wristwatch with 18K gold band, 43.7 dwt.
Auction items remain subject to change prior to the event if new information regarding authenticity, estimated value or other discrepancies is discovered.
Unclaimed property can be dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stocks and insurance policies. Tangible property featured in the auction primarily enters the Treasury as contents from abandoned safe deposit boxes.
Proceeds from items sold at auction are kept in perpetuity for rightful owners to claim at any time.
State Treasury employees and their immediate family members are prohibited from bidding.
The state Treasury currently holds more than $5 billion in unclaimed property owed to more than one in 10 Pennsylvanians. According to state officials, the average claim is worth more than $1,000.
Since taking office, Garrity says she has returned more than $1.2 billion in unclaimed property to Pennsylvanians, businesses, nonprofit organizations and local government agencies. That total includes more than $334 million returned last year.
