The teen who was shot was flown to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.
He was identified as 18-year-old Kendric Curtis.
Neighbors who lived in the area said they heard four gunshots.
State police said that when authorities came in contact with Curtis, he tried to flee and then fired a gun at federal agents. Police said that one of the agents returned fire, hitting Curtis.
Investigators said it was a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent who shot the victim.
Pennsylvania State Police said the ATF was working with the FBI in a joint investigation in the area before the shooting.
Neither the ATF nor the state police has provided any further details about what the investigation included.
Since this involves federal agents, Pennsylvania State Police are leading the ongoing investigation.
No officers were injured in the incident.
On Friday morning, the Aliquippa School District Superintendent, Dr. Phillip K Woods, sent a letter to parents, students and staff, saying in part, “On behalf of the Aliquippa School District, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Kendric’s family and loved ones. They will forever remain in our thoughts and prayers.”
Curtis was a senior at the high school.
