Pirates extend qualifying offer to Brandon Lowe

PITTSBURGH — This article originally appeared on PGHBaseballNOW.com.

The Pirates have extended a $23.15 million qualifying offer to second baseman Brandon Lowe. The 32-year-old has until Nov. 17 to either accept or reject the offer.

Should he accept it, Lowe would return to the Pirates for 2027 for a $23.15 million salary. But Lowe is expected to reject the offer, meaning he will remain a free agent and can negotiate with any of the 30 teams in the league.

If Lowe departs the Pirates in free agency, they would receive a compensation draft pick. Because Pittsburgh is a revenue-sharing recipient, the positioning of the draft pick will be determined by the value of Lowe’s contract. The Pirates will receive a pick between the first round and Competitive Balance Round A if Lowe signs for at least $50 million. If Lowe signs for less than $50 million, the compensation pick comes after Competitive Balance Round B.

Lowe is projected to land a three- or four-year deal and could potentially earn at least $20 million annually.
