Paul Skenes received a quick hook and the Pirates’ bats were silenced in a 2-0 loss to the Marlins at loanDepot Park on Tuesday night.

Esteury Ruiz’s home run was all the Marlins needed. The Pirates (58-63) didn’t have a runner reach scoring position all game.

Marlins starter Eury Pérez (6-9) blanked the Pirates across a career-high-tying seven innings. He allowed three hits, walked two and struck out seven.

Stat to Know

Paul Skenes’ 65 pitches were his third-fewest in a start this season. He threw 37 pitches when he couldn’t escape the first in his Opening Day start against the Mets and threw 64 pitches in a rain-shortened start against the Rays on April 18. Entering this season, Skenes only had two career starts in which he threw fewer than 65 pitches.
