Paul Skenes was solid in his last start of the season and the Pirates manufactured the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to defeat the Cardinals 2-1 for their 81st win to close out their home slate on Thursday afternoon.
Scoring Plays
Top 1st, 1-0 STL: With two outs, Alec Burleson ambushed a first pitch fastball off Paul Skenes and sent it over the right field fence to give the Cardinals (77-82) the lead.
Bottom 1st, 1-1: The Pirates (81-78) tied the game on Brandon Lowe’s RBI single to left field off Kyle Leahy.
Bottom 8th, 2-1 PIT: Spencer Horwitz put the Pirates ahead with a sacrifice fly to center field off Ryne Stanek (2-3). Ronny Simon scored from third base.
Key Moments
After drawing a leadoff walk, Ronny Simon advanced to second on a Ryne Stanek wild pitch and moved up to third when the throw to second from catcher Iván Herrera wound up in center field.
