PITTSBURGH — University of Pittsburgh officials and students celebrated on Wednesday the official opening of a new health sciences building that will house multiple departments.
The 306,000-square-foot building, located on Fifth and Halket in Oakland, will be home to Pitt’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, the School of Medicine’s Departments of Cell Biology and of Computational and Systems Biology, and several other departments.
Pitt Chancellor Joan Gabel, during the formal opening of the new building, said it would help further prepare students for their careers after graduating.
“I think the building represents the sphere of possibilities that we’re so proud of,” Gabel said. “It makes it possible for us to be absolutely top-notch in student preparation, care for patients, discoveries that might not have happened otherwise, a sense of community both in the building and in the neighborhood, and it’s those possibilities that elevate everything that higher ed is able to do.”
