Pitt student charged after making threat on social media to bomb campus building, police say

PITTSBURGH — A University of Pittsburgh student has been charged after police said she made a bomb threat that forced the evacuation of an academic building on campus yesterday afternoon.

Eden Ann Schwartz, 19, is charged with making terroristic threats.

According to police paperwork, the FBI alerted Pitt police to an Instagram story post that read, “ON MY WAY! TO BOMB THE STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.” Officials said the social media post showed Schwartz’s face and the exterior of one of the campus buildings.

Posvar Hall, located on South Bouquet Street, was evacuated around 3:50 p.m. K-9 units searched both inside and outside the building before authorities gave the all-clear following a two-hour search.

Police located Schwartz at the Cathedral of Learning approximately 20 minutes after Posvar Hall was evacuated.

Spencer Deets, a junior at Pitt, was sitting in class when the alarm sounded.

“I was just in class and all of a sudden there was an alarm going off, a couple of us were on social media so we heard something about a potential bomb threat,” Deets said. “I was just fluttered with anxiety and ready to go.”

Following the sweep and resolution, Pitt issued a statement thanking its law enforcement partners for the quick and safe resolution to the situation.
