Pittsburgh-area business bankruptcies drop 38.7% in Q2 after first-quarter surge

PITTSBURGH — Fewer local businesses opted for bankruptcy during the three months ended June 30.

Commercial bankruptcy filings in the Pittsburgh area during the second quarter dropped to 38, a 38.7% plunge from the first three months of 2026 when 62 businesses took the step, marking a 21% year-over-year surge.

But despite the dip in filings, Kirk Burkley, managing partner at WH Burkley LLP, said that 2026 has been extremely busy with no slowdown in activity. The downtown Pittsburgh-based law firm is known for its national bankruptcy practice.
