Declining enrollment was cited for the June closure, which will impact 44 students in grades K-8. The preschool program will continue.
Father George Dalton, administrator of St. Irenaeus Parish, was given permission from Bishop David Zubik to make the change.
"St. Irenaeus School has provided a quality, faith-centered education for thousands of students over the past 88 years. Unfortunately, the considerable decline in enrollment, coupled with increased financial difficulties in operating a smaller school, has resulted in the need to close the K-8 program,” said Dr. Michael Latusek, diocesan superintendent for Catholic schools. "We will be facilitating meetings of parents with principals from nearby Catholic elementary schools to assure them of opportunities to continue a Catholic education for their children."
