PITTSBURGH — A man now in police custody is accused of leading officers on a high-speed chase through downtown Pittsburgh Friday after allegedly hijacking a cab, according to investigators.

Police said the incident began at the traffic light on the McKees Rocks Bridge at 9:20 a.m. when the suspect who hailed a Classy Cab suddenly started yelling for his money back and grabbed the steering wheel.

After the suspect demanded the cab driver hand over his cellphone and belongings, the cab driver jumped out and the suspect took off, according to police.

Authorities said the suspect hit speeds of more than 100 mph before losing control on the ramp to the Liberty Bridge and crashing into a jersey barrier on Crosstown Boulevard.

Bobby Delusia, the vice president of Classy Cab, said this cab involved was an expensive hybrid that’s worth more than $50,000 and is now totaled.

Police said the cab driver was not injured but was shaken up.
