PITTSBURGH — A new owner has stepped up five months after Pittsburgh’s oldest brewery filed for bankruptcy.
The same group that owns “The Priory” has bought the historic “Penn Brewery.”
As the brewery celebrates 40 years, it’s also celebrating new ownership with Eric Heinauer and John Graf.
“We had people coming to us saying, ‘I’d really hate to see Penn Brewery go away,’ and the reality of it was, so would we,” beverage industry veteran Eric Heinauer said.
Penn Brewery plans to keep producing pilsners and other German-style beers at its historic building in Troy Hill.
“We’re super excited about acquiring this iconic Pittsburgh brand,” Priory Hospitality Group president and CEO John Graf said.
Graf’s family opened the Priory Hotel on the North Side, the same year Penn Brewery opened its doors in 1986.
“It’s on the national registry of historic places. Now it’s been revived and has created its own history. 40 years of it,” Graf said.
Penn Brewery filed for bankruptcy in April. At that time, the brewery’s owner promised it wasn’t closing, but just needed to be restructured.
“We’re really excited about reviving what’s been a cornerstone of the redevelopment,” Graf said.
That excitement builds with the brewery’s Oktoberfest slated for the next two weekends.
