MCKEES ROCKS, Pa. — A man accused of killing a local community activist said he knew the victim and committed the crime because of stolen drugs.
Channel 11's Julie Fine was there as 19-year-old Sean Overton was taken to jail Wednesday night.
Overton told Fine that he knew Isaiah Dent.
Overton is facing homicide charges after Dent's body was found in the bathroom of his McKees Rocks home Monday.
"Yeah I knew him. Who didn't know him," Overton said.
According to the criminal complaint, Overton told a witness that he killed Dent because Dent robbed him of his marijuana.
Shortly after Overton was arrested, a large group of people gathered at a vigil to remember the victim. Loved ones and community leaders said Dent was an asset to their community who worked to violence.
"My brother was a king to me because he brought me a very long way," said Dent's sister, Carrol Dent.
"He was just one of those people who was so full of courage and was willing to speak the truth, whether it felt good or not. It was solely for the purpose of improving things," said friend Aveshah Bulls.
Police said Dent died of blunt force trauma to the head. He was found in his Hayes Manorh home after family members grew concerned after they didn't hear from him.
Overton remains in the Allegheny County Jail.
