ETNA, Pa. — A 24-year veteran of the Shaler Township Police Department is planning to retire soon so he can follow his other passion -- making pierogies.
Sgt. Carl Funtal has opened a business in Etna called Cop Out Pierogies. He sells tradition potato and cheese, but also has gourmet selections and a line of desert pierogies, including cherry cheesecake.
Funtal told Channel 11 News his dream could only come true in a city like Pittsburgh where pierogies are king.
“It’s more or less my out, out of police work,” Funtal said about the store’s name. “Time to go on, as Chuck Noll would say, with my life’s work and the pierogies were it, so Cop Out became the name.”
Cop Out was recently voted the best pierogie in Pittsburgh at the city’s Pierogie Festival.
