BRIDGEVILLE, Pa. — A neighborhood in Bridgeville was evacuated after emergency officials said a 60-year-old man killed himself using carbon monoxide.
Police said the man locked himself inside of a bathroom of a home on New York Circle early Tuesday morning.
Channel 11's Alan Jennings reported that Charles Krohn created a makeshift gas chamber in his shower using a gas grill. Jennings reported that Krohn was being investigated as a suspected bank robber by federal officials.
Allegheny County police, a bomb squad, a hazardous materials unit, and even some FBI agents responded because police were concerned about a possible explosion based on notes Krohn left for his wife, warning of an explosion if the lights were turned on. That prompted the evacuation of about 10 nearby homes for fear of possible natural gas in the home.
After a bomb squad robot sent into the house detected no such gas, emergency crews entered and found Krohn's body.
“The door to the shower was closed and sealed off. It looked like, from what we saw from the camera attached to the robot, that there was a charcoal grill,” Bridgeville Police Chief Chad King said.
Krohn’s neighbor, Tussey Hallo, told Channel 11 News that Tuesday wasn’t the first time police were called to Krohn’s home.
"I heard several people say 'we should get together and get him out of here, we should have told him to move,' because they were afraid," Hallo said. "But you would never ever think he would do something like this."
No other injuries were reported.
